Things You Need to Know About Baby Hygiene
Your baby’s health and safety are your priority.
When it comes to your little one’s personal hygiene, knowing how to take care of your little one, especially in the initial months can be baffling for new parents. For instance, an elder in the family suggests using cloth diapers, while a friend stresses on using disposable hypoallergenic diapers for babies. Such opposite pieces of advice from family and friends can confuse new parents.
Figuring out what is the right way can be challenging. But don’t worry, we’re here to help you with some tested tips on baby hygiene.
Essential Baby Hygiene Tips
Give Them a Bath
Like adults, babies also need a bath to stay clean and healthy. However, your baby has delicate skin so over washing is completely out of question.
Usually, newborns need a bath only twice or three times a week. It is best to stick to sponge baths in the initial few weeks. Regularly bathing them with lukewarm water helps maintain their body temperature. As they grow and become more active they will need a more thorough cleaning.
Be careful with the hands, nose, ears, and eyes. These are the most sensitive areas that should be cleaned and kept dry. A good wash rids them of germs and keeps them healthy.
Keep Their Nails Trimmed
Babies have a habit of putting their thumb and fingers in the mouth. So if their nails have dirt stuck in them, germs can enter their body. If the nails are sharp and long, they can hurt themselves.
Cut their nails regularly. Use an appropriately sized clipper, so that you don’t hurt them. The best time to do this is while they’re asleep.
Clean and Dry Their Skin
Wet, dirty skin can cause redness and irritation. When young, your little one’s skin is extremely tender and sensitive.
Wet a clean cloth or a sponge to remove dirt and gently dry the skin. You can also use natural, biodegradable baby wipes that are gentle on their sensitive skin. Focus on skin between their folds, behind the knee, armpits, and diaper region.
Change Diapers Frequently
Skin irritations, rashes and redness are common for babies but can be prevented by maintaining proper hygiene. Depending on their age, babies can use up to 10 diapers a day, Although changing diapers can be taxing, it is very important to do to maintain your baby’s health.
Change diapers at short intervals or as soon as they become dirty. Don’t forget to use gentle baby wipes and clean the region thoroughly.
Be sure to avoid chemically-laden diapers as they can have adverse effects on a baby’s sensitive skin. Instead, you can use hypoallergenic diapers for babies that are made of natural materials, and contain no harsh and skin irritating chemicals, making them soft and harmless for your tiny angel.
Keep Your Baby’s Environment Clean
First things first, always wash your hands before touching your baby or making their food. Otherwise you risk passing on germs to them, leading to infections. Make sure the same is followed with visitors.
Because germs are present everywhere, your baby can contract them in various ways. Ensure your home is clean and void of germs. Don’t overdo it, but make sure to disinfect the floor, door knobs, table tops, etc.
Wash and sterilize your baby’s feeding equipment regularly. Their toys, cot, feeding and changing area also needs to be disinfected for maximum hygiene.
Final Words
Taking care of your baby does not mean you get overly protective and anxious. Follow these steps and maintain cleanliness instead of restricting them to a cocoon. Along with this, give them nutritious foods and use natural baby care products like biodegradable baby wipes to ensure their healthy development.
