Coffee pods have undoubtedly changed the way we drink coffee. They are so convenient as you just put them in your single-serve coffee machine, and a warm brewed cup of coffee is ready within seconds. Also, with coffee pods, the cleaning is less, there is no wastage of coffee as it makes only a single cup, and it’s quick.

Many brands sell premium coffee pods. However, some people want to learn how to make coffee pods at home. The reasons for this are many:

  • Unavailability of coffee pods: If you are short of coffee pods, but want to brew coffee in a single-serve machine only, making your coffee pods can help.
  • Want to use fresh grounds: The coffee in pods is pre-measured and ground. If you fancy a coffee with freshly ground coffee beans, you can create your pods.
  • Want to reuse the pods: If you desire to reuse the empty containers, then infuse them with ground coffee and use them again.
  • Want to try a different flavour: Want to drink a flavour not available with your coffee pod brand? Then grind the beans and put them in an empty coffee pod to brew your favourite coffee.

How to make your own coffee pods?

Time to gather the supplies:

  • Get a scooper that fits your pod holder in your single-serve machine. It doesn’t have to be the exact size but should be of copper or stainless steel or else you will need a Green Pods Eco Descaler.
  • Get empty pods. Or you can use thick paper filters that resemble the pods.
  • Find a cylindrical object for pressing down the ground coffee.

Time to make coffee:

  • The best part of making coffee pods at home is that you can play with flavours. It means you can:
  • Get store-bought pre-ground coffee.
  • Or you can buy the best premium beans you like, grind them at home, measure them to put them in your pods.
  • You can also play with flavours. So, get two coffee and blend them to make a new coffee flavour. Or you can add a vanilla bean to your ground coffee to enjoy vanilla espresso at home. Adding anything else like pumpkin puree or herbs is your choice.

Time to make the pods:

  • Place a cylindrical object like glass on top of your paper filter. Ensure there are no wrinkles.
  • Now, place the filter along with the jar in the copper or stainless steel scooper.
  • Gradually remove the cup/glass without wrinkling the filter paper inside the copper scooper. It should fit properly inside the scooper.
  • Now, it is time to fill the filter with coffee grounds. Measure them, so every pod you make is consistent. Do not go beyond 3 tbsp or use less than 2 tbsp.
  • It is time to fold. Never use any glue or adhesive that will make coffee toxic when you brew it. Press down gently till it folds properly. Let it sit for a while.
  • Now, brew it as you do with your coffee pods.

How to make coffee pods using empty Nespresso pods?

If you buy Nespresso pods or any other brand, you can reuse the empty pods. You can fill it with chocolate or cacao too for making a hot chocolate using your Nespresso single-serve machine. To do this, follow these tips:

  • Clean the empty pod so that any residue of the remaining coffee clears off. You can use the residual of coffee in your garden or for repelling bugs.
  • Now, in the clean pod, add any flavoured coffee ground or cacao powder you want. You can pre-mix the ground coffee with herbs like cardamom or cinnamon to give them a distinct flavour.
  • Make sure you measure the coffee with a scooper or using a measuring scale. Now, push the back of the scoop to level the ground.
  • Now, re-seal it either with reusable caps or with a foil.
  • Your reusable coffee pods are ready.

Coffee pods stay fresh and aromatic till you open them. They are also convenient for making an immediate cup of coffee and are available widely. However, for the reasons mentioned above, if you want to create coffee pods at home, follow these tips. It is simple to do, and you will feel accomplished after making them from scratch.
