7 Ways To Make Your Comfort Food Healthier
Everyone wants their favorite comfort food from time to time. Whether you want to warm up in the winter or you just want something that reminds you of your childhood, there’s something about a comfort food that makes everything better.
They often contain high levels of sugar, salt and fat, so if you’re trying to stay healthy do you have to avoid them entirely? Not at all. Here are some of the best comfort foods that are healthier than you’d think.
1. Ice Cream
Everyone’s sat on the couch eating ice cream directly from the tub, and it just isn’t good for you. If you want your ice cream fix but don’t want to eat all that sugar, then you can create a home made version that’s way healthier.
All you need is milk and bananas, and then you can add in all the extras that you want. For example, why not go with berries, or peanut butter? You can also add in other flavors like vanilla or coca powder. You can get as creative as you like, and if you packing in the fruit you can make it so much healthier than regular ice cream.
2. Grilled Cheese
Who doesn’t love a grilled cheese on a cold day? It’s just the thing, especially with some tomato soup. If you want to make it healthier though, it’s not too hard to do so. All you need is some whole grain bread, and plenty of veggies to add to the mix. Cut back on the butter, and you’ve got a snack that’s much better for you than normal.
No one needs to tell you that chocolate is one of the most popular comfort foods out there. It’s especially delicious when its baked into brownies, but with so much sugar they’re just not good for you.
You can make brownies that are actually healthier, when you make a few swaps. A popular recipe uses zucchini and apple sauce for moisture and sweetness, so there’s much less sugar in your brownies. It sounds a little strange, but you’ve got to try it.
4. Mac And Cheese
This is a popular option from many people’s childhoods. They remember coming home from school and having a big bowl while watching TV. There’s so many calories in a bowl of the boxed stuff though, especially when you add the fat, such as butter.
Don’t despair though, as there is a way of making it healthier. You can add in sweet potato and cauliflower to give your home made mac that orange look that you remember, and make it creamy. That allows you to skip the butter and milk, cutting out a lot of fat.
5. French Fries
There’s no denying the fast food French fries are tasty, but you can make an even tastier version that’s way better for you. You can bake your own with garlic and parmesan, and once you do you’ll never want to go back to regular fries. You can even add in different herbs or spices, and use sweet potatoes for extra nutrients.
Pizza is a comfort food that everyone loves, and no one wants to think about how bad for you it really is. If you have a craving for pizza that you just can’t ignore, then you can make your own that’s healthier, without sacrificing the good stuff.
Keep the cheese and tomato, and instead swap out the base. Cauliflower bases are popular right now, and with good reason. It can give you the same feel as a dough base, but with way more nutrients. There’s also the option to use a Portobello mushroom cap, as this holds up really well.
7. Chocolate Chip Cookies
You can make some swaps to chocolate chip cookies, and make them a lot healthier. For example, swap the flour for rolled oats, almond butter instead of regular butter, and add dark chocolate chips for tasty, healthier cookies.
As you can see, there are so many ways to make those snacks that you love healthier. You just need to think creatively, and try out some different recipes. You don’t need to abandon your favorite comfort foods, just change them up and add more nutritious ingredients to them.
