It does not matter whether you are a small business or a big corporation; if your business has a healthy online presence, it is always at a security risk. Most small businesses think that hackers don’t target small businesses and only go behind big corporations, which is entirely wrong. In the past few years, attacks on small businesses have increased significantly, and plenty of companies have gone down because of this. That is why it is extremely crucial for small business owners to protect their business in every way possible.
Protecting your business against data breaches is not that complicated. All you have to do is follow a few security tips, and no one will be able to enter your network. In this article, I have mentioned a few of these tips that will help you improve your cyber security. Let’s take a look:
1. Change Passwords Regularly
One of the best things you can do to protect your systems from any sort of data breach is to change passwords regularly. This is a good practice to get into because that way, even if someone gets hold of your passwords, there is no certainty that they will be able to use them timely. First, you must ensure that the passwords you are generating are completely random and are a mix of numbers and letters.
There is plenty of software out there that will help you generate new passwords on a daily basis, so you can use those as well. You don’t necessarily have to change your passwords daily. You can do it monthly or weekly as well.
2. Keep Your Software Updated
If you want to keep your business safe, then it is advised that you never skip on security updates and keep your network secure by installing them immediately. Software updates are easy to ignore because they can pop up in the middle of the day when you are working, and you can easily dismiss them.
However, it is strictly advised whenever network updates and new security patches become available; you install them immediately. The more you delay it, the more danger you are putting your company in. If you don’t update your software regularly, it is highly recommended you hire a compromise assessment service to ensure that your network hasn’t been breached yet.
3. Train Your Staff
The best way to protect your business from cyber attacks is to educate and train your employees. Most of the time, hackers find a way into your system because of a human error. The less your employees know about cyber attacks, the more likely they are to fall victim to it. That is why it is highly recommended that you educate your staff via training workshops and learning material.
You should also give them strict guidelines so that they don’t make tiny mistakes that can give someone access to your entire system. For example, you don’t want your employees to be writing down their passwords on their desks. That is extremely dangerous, and anyone can copy it from there to damage your business.
Consider upgrading to a role-based security model, like privileged access management. This will prevent costly data breaches.
4. Two Factor Authentication
Another great way of fighting cyber attacks is to switch to two-factor authentication protection. Using two-factor authentication is like using two locks on your garage doors. So, even if someone manages to break one lock, they would still have to go through the second lock in order to enter the premises. The same is the case in the digital world.
If a hacker manages to get hold of your password, somehow, they wouldn’t be able to login into your network because they would have to provide another authentication as well. That is why it is highly recommended that you start using two-factor authentication for your business to improve its cyber security.
