How to Completely Revamp Your Closet and Discover Your True Style
Ever feel like you have a closet full of clothes, and absolutely nothing to wear? This can happen all too often when you simply buy into trends without considering what you actually want to wear, or what your true style is. Too much of what everyone else wears just doesn’t work, and it can make it hard to actually pluck out a style from the hordes of options.
What do you do in this case? A good way to start is to do a deep clean, and then to use this guide to help you revamp your closet and discover your true style:
Remove Items From Your Closet
To start, you’ll want to remove anything that is too old, doesn’t fit, you haven’t worn, or is too tattered to keep. Doing this can take time, so don’t be afraid to try out different decluttering methods to help you out. If you find it hard to let something go, but you also haven’t worn it in years, then put it at the forefront of your closet and challenge yourself to wear it at least five times in the next month. If you struggle to do that, then it’s time to let go. If you have fun, then make it more regular.
Start Playing Around with What’s Left
Next, once you have only items you intend to keep in your closet, it’s time to experiment with what you have left. This means making up different outfit combinations, experimenting, and being creative. Create a visual diary of the looks that work. You can start by recreating outfits you have seen online and admire. This is best done by trying to use items in your existing closet, since it can help you build essential style skills that will carry on throughout your life. From there, get crazy and creative. You’ll find so many great outfit combinations just by thinking outside of the box.
Understand Where the Gaps in Your Wardrobe Are
Once you start understanding what you can do with your wardrobe, you’ll immediately start to understand more about what you’re missing. In some cases, it may be that the items you left as basics just don’t work for you. This can particularly happen with the shapes of basics. You may not actually like the way those basics hang off of you, which is when it’s time to hit the shops and start discovering.
Start Looking for Basics That Flatter You
Forget everything about what’s trending right now. Trends mean nothing when they’re on your body. When it comes to buying basics, the only thing that matters is how you like the look of them on your form, and how well they work to help you express your personality. For example, you may not actually be thrilled with the skinny jeans in your closet, and find that your personality shines through with boyfriend shorts or even jeans.
Finding the right shape, tone, shade, and even type of basics (or any other missing garment) will do so much for your sense of style, comfort, and creativity.
