Seasoned campers probably need no reminder of why camping is so much different and, in many ways, better than other outdoor activities. However, those who have never been camping or who haven’t camped for a long time might need to learn what makes camping great and what you need to do to have a great time.

The benefits

To begin with, you get to spend a lot of time outdoors in fresh air, which is probably the best relaxation from the busy life most of us lead. Next, you and your family or friends spend time together and strengthen the bonds. Kids learn the value of teamwork, since no camping trip can be successful without everyone doing their share of work. Finally, this is probably the year when most of us had to spend weeks (if not months) in isolation due to the pandemic and camping can provide the best remedy for both our potentially damaged physical and mental health.

Find a perfect spot

If you want to go camping this year, you should start looking for a spot that will allow you to both relax and enjoy yourself. Beginners should probably look for a campsite with decent amenities, since they might not know whether being with electricity, running water and other privileges of modern life would be too much for them. Also, don’t forget to look at the weather forecast and pick a season when the temperatures are neither extremely high, nor low.

Camping companions

You might want to go camping alone and there are many advantages to that decision. However, it’s more likely that you’ll be joined by either family members or friends. Just make sure the people you’re planning to spend some time outdoors are ready for such an experience. Everyone should be on the same page when it comes to what their duties will be and how they need to behave. Having just one person who is not ready to pull their weight or who constantly complains can really ruin the experience for everyone.

Get the right gear

One of the key elements of every great camping trip is the right equipment. First of all, you’re going to need a tent that is both large enough for the number of people using it and resistant to the elements. Inflatable tents are much easier to carry around, but they do cost more than those standard ones with poles. Also, you’re going to need some kind of camping stove and kitchen utensils for preparing food. Next, don’t forget to pack the best camping tables, sleeping bags and inflatable mattrasses for more comfort. Finally, you’re going to need one of sturdy automatic knives, which you can use to prepare food, make shelter or cut a rope, as well as some source of light like a couple of good camping headlamps and lanterns.

What else to pack?

You need to pack some food and the right clothes for your trip. Depending on where you’re camping and how long you’re staying there, you need to have enough underwear, socks and layers of clothes that you can put on and off easily. In case you’re expecting rain and windy weather, make sure you pack a waterproof and windproof jacket, as well as a pair of shoes or boots that will keep your feet dry and warm.

When it comes to food, bring only the food that won’t go bad. So, canned food, dried pasta and rice should definitely find their place in your backpack. Also, you’re going to need water to stay hydrated and prepare food. If you can’t get any potable water for a store nearby, you’re going to need a portable water filter.

Camping chairs and hammock

If you’re going camping with family and friends and you can have your car near your camping spot, it’s a good idea to bring some foldable and lightweight camping chairs. While many people are perfectly comfortable sitting on the grass or logs, we don’t recommend it for extended periods of time. With right chairs, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy your trip. The same goes for a hammock. It’s easy to pack and install and it can allow you to unwind and even catch some sleep. Just make sure you know how to tie it properly and that you find trees strong enough to support your weight.

If follow these tips, you’re probably going to have a great time camping this year, when you most certainly need to rest and relax more than ever. After all, the number of people camping has been steadily increasing over the years, as people are getting fed up with urban life and are looking for ways to spend as much time as possible outdoors. If you’re not one of them, perhaps this is the year when you need to give it a chance. Those who manage to make the most of their first camping trip often become regular campers and simply refuse to go on any other kind of holiday. Maybe you’ll be one of them?
