We’re all told from a young age that reading is good for us. But the question is, how? For those of us who don’t necessarily enjoy curling up with a cup of tea and an interesting read, the concept might be a bit arbitrary.

However, reading can help to improve your life in so many ways. Whether you’re reading fiction or non-fiction books, almost any reading material you happen to pick up would benefit you in some way.

If you want to be a reader but aren’t sure where to even begin, here are five types of books to help you improve your life.

1. Spiritual Books

A good place to start if you’re not used to reading is with something that speaks to your spiritual side. Disconnecting from digital content and picking up a physical copy of a spiritual reading can be great for our souls.

If you believe in God, there are plenty of books for Christians that can guide you on your spiritual path, help you face specific problems or just teach you more about your faith.

If you follow a different religion or are spiritually inclined in another way, there is still plenty of reading material that can be used in your quiet time.

2. Personal Finance Books

Learning about personal finance is something that should start as early as school, but most of us aren’t taught even the basics of taking care of our financial health.

There are countless personal finance books out there that can help us learn how to take care of our money, plan for our futures, budget effectively, save, and even just understand why these things matter.

3. Health and Fitness Books

We’re inundated with social media posts about every type of diet under the sun, weight loss hacks, fitness routines, ‘what I eat in a day’ videos and contradictory advice from fitness influencers. It’s hard to know what to believe and what not.

Reading some real, researched and published material about nutrition and fitness can really help guide you in the right direction. Simply understanding the basics of calories, macronutrients and other useful information on nutrition can help us take better care of our health, and this will truly help you on any weight loss or health-related journey you take on.

4. Productivity Books

We’ve all fallen victim to the time-sucking nature of technology and many of us have lost our way a little since the onset of the pandemic. Taking our productivity into our own hands can feel tough.

Fortunately, there are countless books on productivity available that can assist you with various techniques for habit-building, time management and fighting distraction.

5. Fictional Books

You don’t need to read non-fiction or self-help books in order to improve your life and yourself. Reading a great novel is a spectacular way to unwind, boost your creativity and break away from your day-to-day stress.

Plus, picking up a physical book for entertainment is a nice relief from the constant influx of digital content we consume these days – your eyes will thank you for it.
